Modular Urban Environment – Stylised Game Asset
This project involved creating a modular urban environment with a distinctive stylised art style, focusing on high-contrast colours to deliver vibrancy while maintaining undertones of gritty urban realism. The environment captures the duality of a lively yet worn city, portraying its character through detailed architecture and street elements.

Purpose: Developed a stylised urban environment to explore the blend of vibrant, bold colours and gritty textures, reflecting the essence of everyday urban life through game design. The scene invites viewers to imagine the broader world beyond the rendered frame.
Visual Quality: Combined saturated colours with muted, worn textures to convey both vibrancy and decay. Careful attention was paid to lighting and composition to evoke curiosity and depth.
Implementation
Game Integration: Assets were integrated into Unreal Engine with a focus on lighting and decals. Graffiti, rubbish, and signs of decay were strategically placed using decals to complement the high-contrast aesthetic without overwhelming the scene.
Responsibility - All Aspects
Design & Modelling: Designed and modelled modular pieces in Maya, ensuring they could be reused and reconfigured to create varied urban landscapes while maintaining a consistent art style.
Texturing: Utilised Substance Painter to develop textures that balanced vibrant hues with gritty tones, achieving high contrast and cohesion across assets.
Decal Application: Applied dynamic decals in Unreal Engine to enhance realism and storytelling, showcasing the city’s history through visual details like graffiti and rubbish.
Learning Experience
This project underscored the importance of modularity for efficiency and consistency in environment design. It also reinforced my understanding of balancing artistic stylisation with technical requirements for game integration.
